Der SFV ist seit 2008 mit seiner Geschäftsstelle im Zürcherischen Wangen bei Brüttisellen stationiert. Als «gemeinnütziger Verein zum gedeihlichen Wachstum des schweizerischen Blumenhandels» wurde 1920 der SFV gegründet. Zusammen mit seinen acht (rechtlich eigenständigen) Regional-Sektionen bildet der SFV eine starke Organisation, welche als Arbeitgeber-Organisation die Interessen der Blumenfachgeschäfte und als Branchenorganisation diejenigen der Blumen-Branche in der Schweiz und dem Fürstentum Liechtenstein vertritt.

Mitglieder des Verbandes sind einerseits Blumenfachgeschäfte (Aktivmitglieder, im Verband stimmberechtigt) und interessierte berufstätige Floristinnen und Floristen (Berufsmitglieder, nicht stimmberechtigt). Alle Mitglieder sind automatisch Mitglied in der Sektion ihres Geschäfts- resp. Wohnortes und gleichzeitig auch im nationalen Verband.
 
Die Haupttätigkeiten des Verbandes, resp. dessen Geschäftsstelle umfassen:

1.	Sicherstellung der Ausbildung im Bereich Floristik in Zusammenarbeit mit den Sektionen, dem Bund, den Kantonen und öffentlichen sowie privaten Schulen

2.	Sicherstellung von praxisorientierter Weiterbildung für Floristen in Form von formaler Weiterbildung: Höhere Berufsbildung (BP & HFP) sowie nonformale Weiterbildung in Form von Kursen und Seminaren

3.	Bereitstellung für Dienstleistungen und Verkauf von vergünstigten Produkten für die Mitglieder

4.	Herausgabe & Produktion des einzigen Schweizer Fachmagazins für Floristen („Florist“). Das Verbandsmagazin, welche nicht nur für Mitglieder erhältlich ist, umfasst Aktualitäten aus der Branche, Trends, Tipps und die grösste Stellenbörse für die Branche

Der SFV ist also das Kompetenzzentrum für Bildung und Beruf im betriebswirtschaftlichen Umfeld. Mit den laufenden Angeboten holen sich sowohl Mitglieder als auch Nichtmitglieder praxisnahe Aus- und Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten für ein lebenslanges Lernen. 
Ebenso profitieren Mitglieder von einem grossen Netzwerk, das sie weiterbringt. An regelmässigen Veranstaltungen bilden sie sich weiter (zum Beispiel den Generalversammlungen des Verbandes und/oder der Sektion, an Unternehmerforen oder Berufsbildnertagungen) und knüpfen neue Kontakte. Dank dem monatlichen Newsletter und dem Fachmagazin Florist (16 Ausgaben/a) sind Mitglieder & Nichtmitglieder über nützliche, zukunftsorientierte und auf den Praxisalltag bezogene Themen auf dem Laufenden. Der Verband begleitet mit seiner kerngesunden und mit der Branche vertrauten Pensionskasse «Gärtner & Floristen» seine Mitglieder auch im Ruhestand in eine finanziell sorgenfreie Zeit.

Der Verband wahrt und entwickelt somit eines der letzten Kunsthandwerke der Schweiz weiter. Er will sich auf das Jahr 2020 zu seinem 100-jährigen Bestehen einen neuen Namen (Florist.ch) und ein neues Erscheinungsbild, CI/CD (inkl. Logo) zulegen.
